As its name suggests, the Happy Living and Learning project makes it possible for children under five years of age to enjoy a safe and stimulating learning – and living – environment to reach their full potential.

If you responded with warmth and generosity to our recent request for support for our Sireletsa Bana project, thank you! As a project that specifically targets issues such as malnutrition – a tragic danger for many children living in poverty – Sireletsa Bana is a lifeline to little girls and boys in the Capricorn District of Limpopo, as well as the Thabo Mofutsanyane District of the Free State.

I once lived on the border between Namibia and Angola. It is a flat, dry and beautiful place, with very few people. The border itself doesn’t really exist in places (there is no wall or river), so you can walk through the bush and cross into another country without realising it.

As the delightful quote from Dr Seuss reminds us: ‘ The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’ Reading is so central to learning and life, that it’s impossible to imagine being able to survive without it.

South Africa’s unemployment statistics are sky- high, which is why programmes that promote entrepreneurship amongst our youth are so critically important. Recognising the crucial role of job creation the social and economic well- being of young people, entrepreneurship is a key element of Save the Children’s Youth Engagement & Socio-Economic Engagement Project (YESEEP).

It’s sad that misinformation and marketing messages lead mothers to think that commercially produced infant formula is better for babies than breastmilk. The truth is, ‘breast is best’ – and that’s a fact. The importance of breastfeeding to a child’s health and development – as well as its role in mother-baby bonding – is just one of several reasons that our Sireletsa Bana project is helping to build children’s health in Limpopo’s Capricorn District and in Thabo Mofutsanyane District in the Free State.

Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) welcomes the sentence handed down to Dros rapist, Nicolas Ninow. The North Gauteng High Court sentenced Ninow to life in prison for the heinous crime, on Thursday.

Marking the International Day of the Girl Child (11October), Save the Children South Africa (SCSA), calls for genuine action to protect migrant girls. In a country where child abuse is prevalent, migrant girls are some of the most vulnerable children and a target for sexual exploitation, forced marriage and forced labour.

Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) welcomes the sentencing of the Mpumalanga mother, who killed her four children last year. Today the Mpumalanga High Court sentenced Zinhle Maditla to four life terms in prison.
